Solving High-Temperature Dosing Pump Issues
For years, dosing pumps in the Florida Keys faced persistent challenges due to high temperatures and UV exposure, causing them to lose prime. This issue particularly affected the area’s sodium hypochlorite dosing systems. Our company had dealt with these problems countless times until an opportunity came along that would change everything.
An engineer from Key Largo reached out to CEJCO for help. They asked us to beta-test a few new pumps at a utility in Marathon, a town nestled in the heart of the Keys. CEJCO shipped the pumps and went down to help with the installation. Months went by, and we didn’t hear a word. Curious about the pumps’ performance, our Outside Sales Engineer called the utility to follow up.
The response? “Oh, we forgot we had them!”
The reason they had forgotten? The pumps had never failed—no gassing up, no loss of prime, nothing.
What made these pumps different from the rest? It all came down to a unique feature of the DDA pumps: auto deaeration. This rarely-used feature shakes the diaphragm periodically, preventing gas bubbles from forming—an essential function when dealing with sodium hypochlorite in high-temperature environments. This simple yet powerful feature solved the long-standing issue of degassing that plagued dosing pumps in the region.
This was the start of something much bigger. After that successful trial, we at CEJCO went on to sell and install a total of 47 pumps! To this day, not one of them has experienced a gassing issue, even in the extreme conditions of the Florida Keys.
Pump Environmental Challenges
Monroe County, which includes the Keys, has its own set of requirements when it comes to utility installations. All east-facing, exposed utilities must be elevated to at least 15 feet above sea level, which is why you’ll see everything mounted on concrete pedestals. Additionally, Monroe County has the highest wind load ratings in the U.S., withstanding hurricane-force winds of up to 210 mph.
All the pumps communicated with the client’s SCADA system using Ethernet protocol by CEJCO Services.
Installing our products to meet these extreme conditions wasn’t just a technical challenge; it also required collaboration and trust.
With five wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) in Marathon now fully converted to CEJCO systems, our work in Monroe County has established us as a trusted partner for utilities dealing with similar challenges.
