Universal Grinder Control Panel

A CEJCO case study for universal grinder control panels.

Addressing the Client’s Need

A universal grinder control panel became a necessity due to challenges posed by long supplier lead times and high costs. In this case, a voltage change from 480V to 208V created delays and additional expenses, leaving limited time to find a solution. CEJCO Controls Division recognized the opportunity to provide a replacement control panel that was not only faster but also significantly improved.

A CEJCO Redesign

After reviewing the design requirements, it became apparent that existing solutions lacked flexibility and adaptability. The typical approach involved a current switch with a potentiometer to adjust the trip point manually. This method required the panel to be taken offline repeatedly for adjustments and testing—a process that was time-consuming and inefficient. CEJCO set out to design a more adaptable and universal solution that could support a wide range of voltage and horsepower combinations seamlessly.

The CEJCO Solution

A grinder control panel’s primary function is to detect jams, perform clearing cycles, and return to service automatically. If a jam cannot be resolved, the system should enter a fault state and halt operations. CEJCO’s solution incorporated a current transducer to convert motor current to a 4–20mA signal, which is displayed digitally on the HMI.

Key features of this solution include:

  • Digital Adjustments: Setpoints are stored and adjusted via the PLC and HMI, eliminating the need for hardware changes.
  • Wide Application Range: The current transducer, with a range of 0–50A, supports applications from fractional horsepower to 30HP.
  • Scalability: Operators can scale the signal to accommodate larger motors without reprogramming the system.
  • Minimal Hardware Changes: Adjusting for different voltages or horsepower requires changes only to the main disconnect, MSP, and contactors, keeping the system highly versatile.
